PATIENT SATISFACTION AND BARIATRIC SURGERY: INSIGHTS FROM A RECENT STUDY

Bariatric surgery has become increasingly popular as a treatment option for obesity. A recent study published in Clinical Obesity sheds light on patient satisfaction with bariatric surgery and the factors that influence this satisfaction.

The study followed 351 patients who underwent bariatric surgery over five years. The patients completed questionnaires to assess their satisfaction with the surgical outcome, the reasons for choosing bariatric surgery, and the factors influencing their choice of bariatric centre and surgeon.

The study found that 70% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the surgical outcome five years after surgery. However, most (73.3%) participants wished they had undergone bariatric surgery earlier. The primary motivation for bariatric surgery was health status or quality of life.

The study also revealed that the most important characteristics for a bariatric surgeon to gain patients' trust were "taking time and listen" (74.7%), empathy (64%), and sympathy (56%). These factors were more important than the surgeon's experience or technical skills.

Interestingly, the study found that post-operative satisfaction with the surgical outcome was high and long-lasting in this large cohort of bariatric surgery patients. However, most participants would have undergone bariatric surgery earlier if given a chance.

In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of patient satisfaction in bariatric surgery and the need for healthcare providers to consider patients' preferences and motivations when making treatment recommendations.

The study emphasizes the importance of feeling supported by their health care team, listening to their patients and displaying empathy and sympathy towards them to obtain their trust.

Bariatric surgery can provide significant benefits to patients struggling with obesity. Still, it is essential to ensure that patients are fully informed of their options and that their preferences and motivations are considered.

With a focus on patient-centred care, bariatric surgery can be a positive, life-changing experience for patients seeking to improve their health and quality of life.
